Skull metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is reported rarely. In addition  solitary skull metastasis as the first symptom of HCC is reported even less. Here  we reported a case of solitary skull metastasis as the first symptom of HCC and reviewed the literature on skull metastasis. A 49-year-old male patient was admitted to Jinjiang Hospital of Quanzhou Medical College with a painless parietal-occipital scalp mass  and he denied any history of hepatic disease. A cranial computed tomography demonstrated a hypervascular enhancement with osteolytic change in the right parietal-occipital region  cranial magnetic resonance imaging indicated a highly enhanced and osteolytic skull tumor  and abdominal computed tomography showed a huge tumor in the liver. The other examinations showed no other metastases. Laboratory data showed no liver dysfunction while hepatitis B surface antigen was positive  and alpha fetal protein level was high. A craniectomy was performed and the mass was totally removed. The histological diagnosis was skull metastasis from HCC. The patient was subsequently treated by transcatheter arterial chemoembolization. In a review of published literature  the incidence of skull metastasis from HCC in the period between 1990 and 2011 has significantly increased. The misdiagnosis rate of skull metastases as the first symptom from HCC was high. Therefore  it is necessary to give each patient with a scalp mass that has invaded the skull a liver ultrasound or computed tomography scan. On the other hand  we found that metastases that occurred in the calvaria site were more frequent than those that occurred in the skull base and facial skeleton. This may be worthy of further investigation in the future.

A novel speckle patterns processing method is presented using multi-scale wavelet techniques. Laser speckle patterns generated from the sample contained abundant information. In this paper  we propose a method using wavelet entropy techniques to analyze the speckle patterns and exact the information on the sample surface. In our case  we used this approach to test the solar silicon cell surface profiles based on the sym8 orthogonal wavelet family. According different wavelet entropy values  the micro-structure of different solar silicon cell surfaces were comparative analyzed. Furthermore  we studied the AFM and reflective spectra of the wafer. Results show that the wavelet entropy speckle processing method is effective and accurate. And the experiment proved that this method is a useful tool to investigate the surface profile quality. 2011 SPIE.

A concentric glass spherical dome was usually chosen as the transparent window mounted in front of the optical lens in an image seeker. However  optical ray had to change its direction when propagating through the dome due to refraction unless passing through the center of the dome  which demanded gimbal point coincide with the center of the dome exactly. In fact  gimbal point displacement could not be eliminating due to fabrication  assembly and vibration  therefore the optical axis pointing error generated. In this paper  the effect of gimbal point displacement on optical axis pointing precision in an image seeker was analyzed  and the theoretical expression of the optical axis pointing error was derived based on geometric optics  and the error dynamics was explored by numerical. Take a visible light image seeker as a case  the thickness of concentric glass spherical dome was 8mm and the inner radius was 72mm  and the optical axis pointing errors varying dynamically with the look angle and the gimbal point displacement were shown in graph. When the gimbal displacement was 0.11mm  the maximum optical axis pointing error was 0.054mrad that is equal to the instantaneous field of view (IFOV) corresponding to the camera system whose focal length was 120mm and pixel size was 6.5m. Furthermore  with the gimbal displacement increasing  the optical axis pointing error increased linearly. The analyzed results provided a theoretical basis for the displacement range  which had to be limited strictly in the gimbal design process. 2011 IEEE.

The image resolution can be improved without increasing the requirement to optical imaging systems' parameters and decreasing the size of CCD pixel by staggered arrays technology  which arranges several CCDs in a specific mode. In this paper  an image super resolution method of improving the image resolution for 1.5 times both in two directions by 4 linear arrays staggered based on this technology is presented  which avoids the large computation in a single time by use of circulation method. This method is proved effective by the digital simulation  and a simulated experiment platform is constructed to test its feasibility. The image resolution is improved for 1.42 times of the unreconstructed image according to the imaging experiment of resolution chart  which is closed to 1.5 times in ideal case. And also  the reconstructed and unreconstructed images are evaluated by the image information entropy  which proves that the reconstructed image contains more information. 2011 IEEE.

It is essential to analyze the gimbal displacement errors for a seeker due to the importance for cueing of targets and tracking for the final approach. Otherwise  for a seeker electro-driven with a concentric glass dome  the large errors will decrease the picking  pointing  and tracking precision rooted from the displacement errors existing between the rotation center of the optical system and the gimbal. And the gimbaled camera system displacement errors are never eliminated but reduced due to the geometric errors consists of geometric tolerances of gimbal structure  manufacture  installation and vibration coming from working environment. In this paper  the gimbal displacement errors in an electro-optically stabilized platform resulting from geometric errors and environment errors were analyzed and shown in detail. The mathematical modal of the gimbal displacement errors created based on multi-body dynamics demonstrated the connection between the gimbal displacement errors and the stabilized platform. Taking a visible light image seeker as a case  the diameter is 120mm  and the geometric tolerances came from the values of primary design and the vibration data came from the environmental vibration test on the pitch-yaw seeker  and at the same time  the errors resulting from installation were considered too. Based on calculating  the maximum gimbal displacement error will reach to 0.2mm for pitching angle smaller than 40 and yawing angle smaller than 60. However  the critical parts have been found out according to the probability theory and the reliability analysis successfully used in the paper  and finally  the maximum gimbal displacement error reduced to 0.1mm  which is acceptable corresponding to the picking  pointing and tracking precision for an optical imaging seeker. 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

In order to improve the alignment precision and convergence speed of strap-down inertial navigation system  but in the active system most noise statistical characteristics are unknown  an initial alignment method based on Sage-Husa adaptive filter is presented. We also derived the exactitude alignment error model and adaptive Kalman filter equation in the azimuth of small misalignment angle. As usual  in this case  known the noise statistical characteristics  we introduce the adaptive Kalman filter. It uses the information of observed data  Kalman filter is suitable  on-line estimation noise statistical characteristics and state simultaneously in order to improve the filter continuously  so  the filter has a higher estimation accuracy than the conventional Kalman filter. By simulating verifying  the adaptive Kalman filter enhances the convergence speed and alignment accuracy effectively.

The technique of Phase Diversity (PD) is widely adopted to measure the wavefront error caused by atmosphere turbulence and system error. PD solves the Zernike coefficients of the wavefront by utilizing two images obtained with different defocus value. In this paper  we propose a method to restore the image and estimate the wavefront error of an imaging system. And we use present white noises to verify the robustness of the algorithm. We design an experiment system and implement it in our laboratory. The proposed algorithm is validated by computer simulations and experimental results. To use a broadband white object in experimental system a reasonable simplification for the system model is done. Our results show that the robustness against Gaussian white noises of the method is better then the case when the variance value is 0.03. The proposed method can be used as a wavefront sensor and restore the degradative images by photoelectric image system. 2010 SPIE.

This paper proposes a new restoration method  only using the single image information  combining atmospheric physical model with fusion techniques to reduce the degradation of the image contrast in bad weather conditions caused by atmospheric aerosols  such as haze and fog. The basic idea of this method is to utilize physics-based model method instead of multisensors to generate a serial of virtual images  and then to fuse those virtual images into a high contrast image based on the wavelet fusion technique. In contrast to previous methods  our restoration technique is not only independent on predicted structure  distributions of scene reflectance  or detailed knowledge about the particular weather condition  but also adapt to the situation without a reference image or images with moving objects captured by a video camera. Experiments on different poorcontrast images demonstrate the availability of the proposed method in case of restoring the atmospherically blurred images. 2010 IEEE.
