泥石流防治问题是第四纪地质与同期人类社会并行发展到当代出现的。第四纪沉积物类型直接影响着泥石流性质。现代地质作用过程和规模制约着泥石流防治类型的选择。新构造运动和地震还控制着泥石流的分布。加强应用第四纪研究的最好途径是，第四纪地质学家和工作者满腔热情地投身于国家经济建设、国防建设和防灾减灾实践中去做出系统性成果。

The debris flow distribution in China is extensive ,type is varied ,endangerment is serious, control problem is sharp. Analysing from Quaternary geology ,control problem of debris flow occurs in the present age only because both of Quaternary geology and human society have been simultaneously developing up to now. Type of Quateranry deposit directly affects nature of debris flow. For exsample ,mudflow in the wind loess area of the north in China ,debris flows of all around in the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau , water-stone flow of the north slope in the Qinling ( range )etc. have been decided from the native Quaternary deposit. As a process of natrual gologic action , the scale of debris flows still restrict the selection of control type of. debris flows. Debris flows to be able to have been controlled are only limited to the mid-small scale one of rain-type at present. For rainstorm and glacier debris flow , people may only go by arol1ndabol1t rOl1te in order to separater them selves from dangerol1s district ,or calcluate , warn and forecast with the aim of the prevention and reduction calamity. Netectonic movement and earthql1ake still dominate distribution of debris flows.
