Pair creation in localized electromagnetic fields of different spatial extensions

中文摘要We investigate the creation of electron-positron pairs in a combination of static electric and magnetic fields. The electric and magnetic fields point along the x direction and z direction, respectively, and vary along the x direction. In the case when the spatial extensions of the two fields are not equal to each other, the quantum field theoretical solutions to the Dirac equation suggest a complete suppression of the pair-creation process as long as an effective scalar potential is subcritical, even though the effective electric field may still be supercritical.
