Radar altimeter has become one of the most usefulm icrow ave sensing instruments for observing the earth in the past three decades, and the results from several successfulm issions, such as Geosat、ERS1+ 2 and Topex, has been w idely used in many geodesy field, particularly in ocean topography. Error analysis is one of the core techniques in the design of Spaceborne Radar A ltimeter, because the altimeter data may be imp ractical for some app lication casesw ithout adequate p recision. Amp litude and phase ripp les of the RF system are important error sources in heigh t measurement. Th is paper dealsw ith the error issue with the help of the well-established tool--"paired2echo theory". Firstly, we consider that the ripp les have the sinusoid forms, and then we can convert these ripp les into range side lobes. On the other hand, w e establish the form of the sidelobe and derive the relationsh ip betw een side lobes and heigh t bias. In th isw ay w e can establish the relationsh ip betw een amp litude (phase) ripp les and heigh tbias.A nd finally, app lying th ismethod to a practical system , we can get some quantitative requirements for the amp litude and phase ripp les. These requirements are very critical in radar altimeter design.
