英文摘要 | Neural activity at all functional levels is subjected to randomness and noise as can be seen in recordings of ion channels and action potentials as well as in physiological parameters of autonomic processes up to measures of mental and behavioral functions. This will be illustrated by experimental recordings supplemented by mathematical modeling studies. Particular emphasis will be laid on the fact that neural processes are endowed with a principally unavoidable uncertainty which is introduced already at the basic level of neural functions: the opening and closing of ion channels. This channel noise will not necessarily smear out toward higher functional levels but may even be amplified by another particular property of neural functions, their inherent nonlinearities. It can be speculated whether such principle uncertainty is the reason why cognitive functions, like decision-making, are typically vague and imprecise but also might be a source of flexibility, adaptability, and creativity. |
