英文摘要	A fast and efficient approach for color image segmentation is proposed. In this work, a new initialization technique for fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering is implemented to generate the initial centroids and the number of clusters adaptively according to the characteristics of the image, which operate across the Hill-climbing algorithm in the three dimensional CIE Lab* histogram of the input color image. It overcomes the shortage of random initialization in traditional FCM clustering. In addition, a filter for post-processing is introduced to effectively eliminate small spatial regions. Compared with the traditional fuzzy C-means clustering, experiments show that the proposed segmentation algorithm achieves high computational speed, and salient regions of images can be effectively extracted. Moreover, the segmentation results are close to human perceptions. 1548-7741/Copyright © 2011 Binary Information Press December 2011.
