In a bi-stable device, two GaAs injection lasers 2, 4 are arranged so that when either is excited its output passes through, and thereby quenches, the other. As shown in Fig. 1, each laser comprises an optical cavity defined by a totally reflecting face 6 of SiO and Al and a partially reflecting (reflectivity <“) face 8 of SiO, the sides 10, 12 having a non-reflecting quarter wave coating of SiO. Current is supplied through connections 17. To switch from the stable state in which laser 2 is excited, an external optical input 19 is applied to quench laser 2 thereby allowing laser 4 to lase. Since the output from the quenching laser is amplified by the quenched laser, it is possible to split the final output from face 12 to serve as inputs 19 for similar succeeding bi-stable devices. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the output from laser (2) passes without reflection through laser (4) and only one mirror (16) is provided to reflect the output from laser (4) through laser (2). In Fig. 5 (not shown), an absorbing layer (32) is included in the optical cavity between the totally reflecting surface (34) and the active region (30). In Fig. 6 (not shown), the reflecting faces (6, 8) are wider than the non-reflecting faces (10, 12) and lenses (36, 38) are used to converge the output.
