英文摘要Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease, of which the most widely used therapeutic drug is acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AChEI). Huperzine A, an alkaloid developed by Chinese scientists, is a potent AChEI.Recent work reveals that besides the acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect, huperzine A can also significantly benefit mitochondria in various models like middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat, APP/PSl transgenic mice and beta - amyloid (Alphabeta) injured isolated mitochondria. This review summarizes the pivotal roles of mitochondria in AD processing and the protective effects of huperzine A against AD associated mitochondrial dysfunction, and also discusses the underlying molecular mechanisms of above beneficial effects.
