英文摘要	PURPOSE:To automatically compensate a characteristic fluctuation, obtain a high extinction ratio, and improve a maximum light exposure quantity by a method wherein when a light exposure quantity by a sawtooth waveform is modulated, an optical output of a semiconductor laser is controlled so as not to be higher than a fixed value, and once it reaches the value, a pulse width is modulated at the value. CONSTITUTION:An optical voltage C is gradually increased. When reaches a value Pm, an output of a comparator comes to a high level, and a flip flop output 61 is set to a high level. The high level state makes an output of a sample/hold circuit turned to a hold state. After that, a drive current is kept constant. At the same time, an integrator circuit 11 starts integrating a flip flop output 62 to obtain a ramp waveform. A substructer 13 outputs the result of (P-Pm) R2/R1, whereby the output of the comparator 12 becomes a high level when an integrator output 63 reaches (P-Pm) R2/R This signal is transmitted to a RESET input of a flip flop 6 through an AND gate 15 and an OR gate 7 to reset the output of said flip flop to a low level and interrupt a drive current.
