英文摘要 | A laser 100, and method of operating a laser, including: at least two independently controllable excitation sources 110, 120, preferably laser diodes, that produce input beams for pumping the gain medium 102, preferably a crystalline gain medium such as a Thulium-doped Yttrium Lithium Fluoride slab; beam splitters 132, 134, preferably a polarising beam splitter, for splitting the input beams into sub-beams; and, beam guiding arrangements 136, 138, 140, 142, preferably mirrors, for guiding the sub-beams from the excitation source, such that the sub-beams from each input beam are directed inwardly towards opposite ends of the gain medium. Each excitation source may be aligned with, and directed towards, an end of the gain medium. Preferably, one of the sub-beams is not re-directed and is already aligned with an end of the gain medium. The sub-beams from an excitation source may be parallel with each other when directed inwardly to the gain medium, with the sub-beams from one excitation source preferably being offset from each other. There may be a shaping lens between the excitation source and the beam splitter. A controller may be used to vary the relative intensities of the input beams. |
