A semiconductor device 1, such as a gallium arsenide diode, laser or Gunn effect device, is clamped between the flat faces 7, 8 of two rigid metal, preferably copper, mounting pieces 2, 3 which together form a T-shaped assembly split down the stem of the T and provide heat conduction paths from the device to a flat surface 9 perpendicular to the clamping faces. The mounting pieces are clamped together by an insulating bolt 5 and form the electrical contacts to the device, and the abutting surfaces of the pieces and the device are preferably coated with indium. A spacer 4 is inserted between the mounting pieces adjacent the surface 9 which is placed in contact with, or seals an opening in, a cryostat. A square section tubular glass window (21, Figure 3, not shown) may be clamped between the faces 7, 8 to enclose the device.
