英文摘要PURPOSE:To align light in phase and to enhance an integrated optical isolator of this design in mode conversion efficiency by a method wherein a waveguide layer is formed of a superlattice structure. CONSTITUTION:Light oscillated in a DBR laser section passes under a metal film 25 which serves as a mode selection film and is not attenuated as it is TL light. When the light concerned is incident on a superlattice waveguide layer 23 from an optical guide path 16, it is partially reflected due to the refractive index difference between them. But, as the joined faces of them are tilted against a travelling direction of light by an angle of a few degrees, the reflected light is projected outside of a ridge and does not return to a laser oscillation section. The light polarized by an angle of 45 degrees as propagating through the waveguide layer 23 is projected passing through a polarizing plate 26 which has a main axis extended in that direction. The return light of the projected light reflected from an end face is made to enable only its 45 degree polarized component to pass through the polarizing plate 26, but while it travels through the waveguide layer 23 in the opposite direction, it is furthermore converted in mode and becomes a TM wave at an interface between an isolator and a laser due to the nonreciprocity of the magnetooptic effect. In result, the return light is absorbed by the metal film 25 and prevented from returning to the laser.
