The components 1, 2 are supported in pins 4, 5 rotatable about axes a 4 , a 5 , which are separated by a distance d which satisfies (r 1 - r 2 ) # d # (r 1 + r 2 ). The pins are fixed in their adjusted positions, e.g. dry soldering, welding, clamping or glueing, or by shrinking by cooling the previously warmed housing. The coupling losses between the fibres 1, 2 can be reduced by altering their refractive indices at their ends, e.g. by heating, and a reflection-reducing substance, e.g. an immersion oil, may fill the space between the ends. In a modification, adjustment is made by rotating only one pin about its axis of rotation, and the housing about the axis of rotation of the other pin which is held rigidly in the housing. |
