英文摘要	With the globalization of world economy, the competition of agricultural products is mainly determined by the production cost economically. Though many works have referred to the competitiveness of maize production more or less, few of them has focused on the production cost directly. This paper comparably analyzes the maize production costs under a unified accounting form between China and the U.S. And it describes the historic variation and compares the present costs using methods of growth rate, as well as the structure of cost. The results show that maize cost in China has increased since 1993, while it has been decreasing in THE U.S. during the same period; and consequently, the maize cost in China was much higher than that in U.S in 2000. The cash cost has a greater impact on the total cost. While both the cash cost and the non-cash cost in China are higher than that in THE U.S. by 120 Psi/ton. In the variable cash costs, some inputs such as power, seeds, and irrigation and their constitutions in the two countries are all increased. The results of comparison of fixed cash cost between the two countries show that extra burden in terms of agricultural tax of Chinese farmer has been increasing dramatically. As regards the non-cash cost, the unpaid labor cost has always been the major component in China, while the capital depreciation constitute the main part in the United States. General conclusions from a comprehensive study of the cost, price, and profit show that maize production in the U.S can be characterized by "low cost, high yield and high subsidy", while it is featured as "high cost, low yield and low subsidy" in China. These variations and features reflect the difference of macro-development trend in agriculture, natural endowment, techniques as well as agriculture policy. Finally, the paper put forward some suggestions to promote the competition of China's maize production.
