THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ANCIENT AND FAMOUS TREES IN QINGDAO CITY, SHANDONG PROVINCE, CHINA AND POSSIBLE CONSERVATION MEASURES

英文摘要We surveyed the characteristics of ancient and famous trees in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China, in terms of species, number of individuals, origins, distribution and age structure of the population as well as the current problems involved in protecting these trees through interviews, a literature review and quantitative analysis. Based on our results, we suggest some measures for protecting these trees. We found that the existing 1224 ancient and famous trees in Qingdao City comprise 92 species, 68 genera and 39 families. Some of the trees have religious or sacrificial origins, while others grew spontaneously or were introduced from outside the city. In terms of the distribution of ancient and famous trees, native ancient trees outnumber introduced ones, relatively young trees outnumber older ones; urban trees outnumber suburban ones; trees on construction land outnumber those in land of other use types; and trees belonging to temperate genera outnumber genera of other areal-types. Given the threats from habitat degradation, natural disasters, pests, declining tree health and poor management, there is a strong need to conserve these trees by restoring habitats, carrying out effective pest control, improving conservation techniques, enhancing environmental management and related legislation, and enlarging fund investment and establishing an electronic portfolio.
