Application of an on-sorbent derivatization sampling and in-injection port thermal desorption method for identification and quantification of C1-C10 ambient carbonvls

英文摘要The standard method for the determination of airborne carbonyls is to collect carbonyls onto 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) coated solid sorbent followed by solvent extraction of the solid sorbent and analysis of the derivatives using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). We here report a newly developed approach that involves collection of the carbonyls onto pentafluorophenyl hydrazine (PFPH) coated solid sorbents followed by in-injection port thermal desorption and gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of the PFPH derivatives with mass spectrometric (MS) detection. A few carbonyls, such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone, are ubiquitous in both indoor and outdoor air as well as in organic solvents. In previous practices, solid sorbents were coated with the derivatization agent by applying solutions followed by drying, which inevitably introduces carbonyl impurity in the solvent to the sampling sorbent. We here describe a vapor coating technique that eliminates the use of solvents during the coating step; thereby greatly reduce background carbonyl contaminants. This newly developed method has been applied to measure ambient carbonyls in an urban location in Guangzhou, China. A total of 22 carbonyls were positively identified and quantified. An additional 14 carbonyls were tentatively identified on the basis of their mass spectra and relative retention times to known carbonyl compounds. Ranking of the measured carbonyls with respect to removal of the hydroxyl radical showed formaldehyde to be the most important followed by nonanal and glyoxal. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde only accounted for ??42% of OH removal by all the measured carbonyls, which indicates the importance of measuring all the significant carbonyls.; EI; 0
