Carbon Nanoparticles for Cationic Dye (Methylene Blue) Removal from Aqueous Solution

英文摘要Water pollution, such as heavy metals, organic dyes and antibiotics, is one of the most concerned environmental problems nowadays. The improvement of the performance of traditional adsorbents would benefit the water decontamination. Herein, we reported that active carbon (AC) could be adopted as the precursor of carbon nano-adsorbent with improved performance. Oxidized carbon nanoparticles (O-CNPs) were prepared by oxidizing commercial AC with modified Hummers method. O-CNPs were in the range of 10-500 nm and enriched in oxygen containing groups. Due to the effective nanonization and oxidation, O-CNPs were good adsorbent of cationic dye, namely methylene blue (MB), with huge adsorption capacity of 4.73 x 10(2) mg/g (carbon-equivalent). When the initial MB concentration was lower than 50 mg/L, the removal efficiency was higher than 99.9% and the MB solution became colorless. According to the capacity assessment, the adsorption capacity (carbon equivalent) of AC increased 58% after the nanonization. The implication to the applications of nanomaterials in water treatment is discussed.
