Micromechanical Simulation of Fines Content Effect of Soils Using the Discrete Element Method

英文摘要A micromechanical simulation is carried out to study the effect of the fines content on the mechanical property of sand-silt-clay mixed soils by using the Discrete Element Method. Biaxial compression experiments of sand-silt-clay mixed soils with different particle compositions are simulated. Particles with different mechanical properties and dimensions are used to investigate mechanical responses of the sand grains, silt grains and clay grains respectively during the biaxial compressions. Numerical results indicate that stress-strain curve transfers from strain softening to strain hardening with the increase of fines contents, and is affected by the force and displacement between adjacent particles. If the threshold of fines content is exceeded, the initial elastic modulus of mixed soils is changed with fines content. The fine-grained soils have larger number and better uniformity of force chains than that the coarse-grained have. The advantage of numerical simulation is that some microscopic factors influencing macro mechanical properties can be observed in the numerical simulations, which are difficult to achieve in the experiments.
