【Abstract】The imperial civil service examination lasted for eight hundred years. The Lý and Trân Dynasties were first to introduce and explore the examination system, and the Lê Dynasty subsequently transformed the examination system from an ad hoc to a formalized institution. The typology of this formalized institution is as follows. Firstly, the system was highly regulated—in the Lê Dynasty, examinations were administered regularly. Secondly, examinees who passed the bar were included in the jinshi order, formally recognized by way of imperial inscriptions. Thirdly, jinshi were regularly employed as beishi, or Ambassadors to the North. Each formalizing aspect was a reflection of the peculiarities of the Lê Dynasty's examination system. Such formalization continued down to the Nguyên Dynasty. As such, the implications of this study goes beyond the process of ad hoc to formalized examination system, but also concerns the development of Confucianism during the HâuLê Dynasty.
