英文摘要	四字格是现代汉语词汇的有机组成部分，是文言语体在现代汉语里的继承和发展。对于四字格在英语翻译中的使用，翻译界观点不一。反对者认为，四字格具有浓郁的汉语文化色彩，如果用得太多会破坏原文的语言风格，以词害意。而支持者则认为，四字格言简意赅、音韵和谐、形象生动，如果能恰当地应用，可以使译文增色不少。双方的矛盾并不是不可调和的，争论的焦点在于如何把握四字格在英汉翻译中使用的度。 本文从四字格存在的客观现实性出发，一方面认真分析了冯亦代的四字格言论，另一方面又仔细考察了其最得意的译文，并做了定量分析，发现冯亦代的观点有不少可疑之处，且他本人的做法也令人颇为不解：他一方面批判他人对四字格的应用，尤其是四...; Originating from Classical Chinese, four-character formats have developed in Modern Chinese and become a fundamental part of modern Chinese vocabulary.
