英文摘要	鸦片战争以来，清王朝危机四伏，摇摇欲坠。与此同时，在中国东南沿海的台湾，却拉开了一场近代化运动的序幕。架设电报、创办新式邮政、采用机器采煤等一系列洋务新政，方兴未艾。一些官员试图通过新政，使台湾成为中国先进省份的典范，借此带动全国发展，挽救没落的清王朝。作为晚清台湾洋务运动重要内容之一——台湾铁路的兴建，则是这场运动的最集中代表。 晚清台湾铁路不仅是台湾历史上第一条近代化铁路，亦是中国最早的铁路之一。然而台湾铁路的修建并不是一帆风顺的，经过丁日昌与刘铭传两位行政主官的共同努力，才得以完成。虽然建成后的台湾铁路，存在着许多缺陷与不足，没有发挥当初设想的那样强有力的推动地方经济、社会发展的作用。...; The Qing dynasty was crisis-stricken and on the verge of collapse since the Opium War.
