英文摘要	当西方的坚船利炮敲开古老中国的大门时,中国就开始面对着如何走向世界的问题。作为较早接触西方的晚清驻外公使，担负着认识世界、走向世界的时代使命。郭嵩焘、刘锡鸿、曾纪泽和薛福成都是以洋务官员出任驻外使节，对“借法自强”既有感性的体悟，又有理性的认识，而奉命出使又为他们提供一个近距离观察西方世界的机会，得以从一个新的角度和立场来重新审视与反思洋务运动的成效和近代中国的发展路向。本文试将他们作为晚清早期驻外公使的一个特殊群体，比较研究其对西方政体、经济所进行的观察与思考，从中探寻国人在向西方学习过程中寻觅富强之道的心路历程。全文分为五部分：第一章为绪论部分，介绍本文的研究对象和选题缘起，并做相关的学术...; China began to consider how to open to the world when the western fleets knocked on the ancient China.
