英文摘要	五四运动实际上是两个运动:五四新文化运动和五四爱国运动,前者是思想启蒙运动,后者是反帝政治运动,二者性质不同,由此形成了启蒙和革命两个传统。五四以后,启蒙运动终结,而革命运动兴起,而且,启蒙精神在革命过程中衰微。其根源在于中国现代化的两个任务即争取现代性和建立现代民族国家的冲突。由于现代性来源于西方,而建立现代民族国家要反帝,所以二者必然矛盾。由于民族危机的急迫性,加之早期现代民族国家的“绝对主义“性质,导致以牺牲现代性和反现代性的方式建立现代民族国家。这就是“救亡压倒启蒙“的历史根据。; The May Fourth Movement actually comprises two movements with different nature: the movement of New Culture and the movement of patriotism.The former is of the enlightenment of thoughts and the latter one is of anti-imperiallism politics.After May Fourth, Enlightenment movement came to an end while the revolutionary movement arise.What's more, enlightenment spirit was also on the wane, the reason of which lies in the two motives of China's modernization: striving for modernity and a modern nation-state.These two motives inevitably contradict each other since modernity comes from the West while the establishment of a nation-state must oppose imperialism.The imperative of a nation-state as well as the absolutism in an earlier modern nation-state leads to the establishment of a nation-state via anti-modernity.This is also the historical basis for the saying ‘national salvation prevails over enlightenment'.
