英文摘要National Natural Science Foundation of China [30300269]; In the present study, neurons isolated from the eyestalks of the Kuruma shrimp, Marsupenaeus japonicus were successfully cultured in vitro. The cultured neurons could be assigned to five different categories according to initial cell viability and the subsequent growth potential. They were "multipolar cells", "bipolar cells", "unipolar cells", "veilers", and "large cells". Most neurons were kept alive for more than 7 days. The most common cells in the culture were the bipolar cells, which survived up to two weeks. The neurons isolated by collagenase (type I) or papain had a similar number of alive cells and a similar survival time. The neurons were adapted to modified Medium 199 and Liebowitz's-15 medium, which were widely used in aquatic cell culture. A muscle extract from the Kuruma shrimp inhibited the outgrowth of neurons, while the survival period of neurons was extended for 4 days in media enriched with 20% foetal bovine serum. Our study provides valuable methods for further research on the electrophysiology of these neurons in vitro.
