; A method to determine the setting time of concrete was developed based on measuring the development of deformation with time of very early age concrete. The experimental results show that the global deformation of very early age concrete first exhib- its plastic swelling in the first few hours after casting and then exhibits shrinkage, with a gradually reduced rate. The end of swelling normally corresponds to the point of concrete setting, at which the transformation of fresh concrete from liquid-like plastic state to solid state is complete. The above definition of concrete setting time is well coordinated with the determination method by measuring the lateral stress acting on the form of concrete. According to the definition of concrete setting time proposed in the present work, the deformation of concrete in the early age may be divided into two categories: non deleterious deformation and deleterious deformation. The deformation occurring after the setting point belongs to deleterious deformation, and the deformation occurring before the setting point is non deleterious deformation.;
