This novel reveals his profound understanding of “empire” and has magnificent influence on Western literati. The book Empire by Negri and Hardt can be regarded as a further exploration derived from Waiting for the Barbarians. In the novel, there are two sorts of empires, represented by the Old Magistrate and Colonel Joll respectively. The present author will cite the novel as an example to study Coetzee’s perception and enunciation of the postcolonial empire.
