After a comprehensive literature review in the field, this paper analyzes spousal hitting among married urban Chinese couples and its health consequences, using the survey data from a nationally representative random sample. The results show that it is not unusual for urban Chinese households to experience spousal hitting. Offenders tend to exaggerate while victims to cover up such violent experiences. Jealousy between couples significantly increases the odds of hitting; households with stress and pressure, such as the presence of pre-school kids or low SES, report more hitting incidences. Women who earn higher incomes than their husbands face a higher risk of spousal hitting.
