These were in fact the source for his theory that "the six Confucian classics are all history" (六经皆史). The process of the formation and development of this theory reveal the richness of its content: for example, the value concepts of the union of Dao (道) and Qi (器), of officials and educators, and of governance and teaching that derived from such theories as "the six classics are stories of Zhou officials" and "there were no personal writings in ancient times;" the advocacy of "understanding the Dao through history," interpreted from the perspective of the relationship between "transmission" (shu述) and "creation" (zuo作), that arose from debates over approaches to the classics; the conspicuous demand for a professional "respect for history" developed in the course of compiling the Shi Ji Kao (Study of Historical Records); the awareness derived from the practical compilation of history, of the idea of Dao as one's mission possessed by the humble chroniclers of old; and the belief formed in the quest to understand the present through the past, that the classics were both "truthful records of one generation" and "constant laws of tens of thousands of generations". Zhang's new insights into the six classics were closely related to his response to the debates between "Han xue" (汉学) and "Song xue" (宋学), and were even more closely connected to his desire to discover what role the classics should play in the age in which he lived. |
