中文摘要	作为一个出版机构,商务印书馆以诸如诠释、编纂、编译、重新定义、排版、出版等特定方式参与了对符号现代性的翻译和反译过程。这些活动激活了太平天国后江南社会由那些具有专门技巧的文献学家、改革派学者以及企业家所构成的网络。商务印书馆的早期历史呈现给我们一种不能完全以"文化工业"的范例去理解的出版史。在商务印书馆,编译的文献学工作实现了一种文化政治,它实际上抗衡着帝国主义和殖民主义文化产业对中国古籍的影响。商务印书馆给了我们一个机会去观察出版事业在一种非资本文化史中的演变和延续。借助商务印书馆和其他出版社所出版的语言工具书、教科书、百科全书词典等,上海的城市学术群体在20世纪初对舶来的现代符号进行重译、重编和反译的过程中起到了领导作用。通过这种重译或反译,受到大众欢迎的编译者对教育和知识以多元流通的方式向流行于欧洲和日本的"普适"知识系统提出了挑战。与明治维新不同,这个时期中国的文化任务并不是西化,而是以文献学的方法论和编译的实践应对和梳理文化帝国主义的现代性。这个文化任务带来的实践使上海从太平天国时期的避难所转变为19世纪末20世纪初新式城市文化的摇篮。因此,早期商务印书馆的实践为我们理解生存在帝国主义文化扩张和清帝国体制交叠处的现代文化史提供了新的视点和解读方式。; As a publisher,the Commercial Press took part in the process of translating the modernity of symbol by interpretation,codification,compilation,re-definition,layout,publishing and other specific ways. The early history of the Commercial Press took on the history of the publication which can not be completely understood by "cultural industry" paradigm. In the Commercial Press,the work of compiling philology achieved a kind of political culture,which is actually against what the imperialism and colonialism do with the Chinese ancient books. The Commercial Press has given us an opportunity to observe the evolution and continuity of publishing industry in a non-capital cultural history. With the help of the language reference books,textbooks,encyclopedia published by the Commercial Press and other publishers,the academic groups from Shanghai had played a leading Role in the process of translating the modern symbols in the early 20th century. Therefore,the practice of the early Commercial Press provided us a new perspective and interpretation in understanding the history of modern culture which survived at the overlap of the expansion of cultural imperialism and the Qing imperial system.
