中文摘要	The formation of surface films in reciprocating cylinder bore/piston ring pairs lubricated by fully formulated engine oils was studied using the electrical contact resistance (ECR) method. Surface properties such as element content, film thickness, chemical compounds, and crystal structure were characterized using surface analysis tools, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The investigations show that a film, with a thickness of about 1.0 mu m, forms on the cylinder bore surface. The surface films consist mostly of organic carbon in amorphous form and oxides, plus small amounts of phosphate, sulphide, sulphate etc. formed from functional additives in the lubricant by tribochemical reactions. The results also show that the ECR method provides real-time information about the formation of surface films.
